Rochester Monarchs AAA Hockey Club Announce Full Season Midget Plans

The Rochester Monarchs AAA Hockey Club is pleased to announce the expansion of the Midget AAA program with the addition of a full season 16U and 18U franchise to take part in the U.S Premier Hockey League (USPHL).  The Monarchs’ Director of Hockey, Francois Methot, is very excited for the new opportunities players in the region will receive and the initial excitement the plans have generated around the hockey community.

“The enhancements with our Midget program are a great step towards keeping the kids from Rochester at home,” said Methot.  “Our goal is to provide the best exposure fir our Midget players to have the opportunities to continue on to the higher levels of hockey.”

As previously announced, Jamie Bird will return to Rochester for the 2016-17 hockey season and lead the 16U Tier I Tournament-Bound club.  After pursuing a full-time coaching opportunity with the Elite Hockey Program at Cheshire Academy in Connecticut for the 2015-2016 season, Jamie now returns home where he coached for more than ten years at the Midget AAA level in Western New York. He has had a positive influence in the development of many current, former and future NCAA Division I and Division III players. While coach of the 18U Buffalo Jr. Sabres in 2014-2015, he guided his team to a New York State championship, a quarter-final appearance in the USA Hockey Nationals, a 25-game winning streak, and a national Tier I best 60 wins.

At the 18U level the Rochester Monarchs Midget Program Director Ryan Gage will be the head coach for the 2016-17 season and will be assisted on his staff by Ryan LaShomb and his father, Jody Gage.  This will be another Tier I Tournament-Bound team for next season.

As the son of Rochester American legend Jody Gage, Ryan grew up entrenched in the Rochester hockey scene.  For the 2015-2016 season Coach Gage led the Monarchs AAA 16U team to the NYSAHA State Tournament after previously coaching the Monarchs' for three straight seasons.  Prior to joining the Monarchs he coached the Perinton Youth Hockey's 16U Midget Minor teams for two seasons.  He has also served as an assistant coach at Aquinas in the past and also currently volunteers with USA Hockey for the Western New York Development camps.

“It is very exciting to see our program grow by adding an 18U team,” said Gage.  “This gives the kids in and around our community the ability to continue their hockey development while remaining home for the most important years of their development as players and local community members.”

The backbone of the Midget schedules will be built around the participation in elite showcases and highly competitive tournaments in order to face elite competition to maximize player exposure.  Events such as the Compuware/Honeybaked Invitational in Detroit, Toronto Titans Invitational, Boston Jr. Bruin Shootout, East Coast College Cup, Harbor Center Cup and others will be strongly considered.  The Monarchs 18U and 16U teams will also combine these events with a league schedule in the USPHL to round out the full season schedule.

“We are excited for the USPHL franchise to help supplement our independent showcase schedule,” said Gage.  “This will best allow the kids on our program to get diversified exposure.”

Like all AAA Monarch teams the 16U and 18U teams will have regular weekly skill sessions led by Francois Methot.  The teams will also have access to goalie training led by Bob Janosz through the organization.

“With Ryan Gage and Jamie Bird at the helm of our 18U and 16U teams, the kids in the program will be in great hands,” said Methot.  “I couldn’t be happier about the direction our Midget program and organization as a whole is headed.  We can give kids the opportunity to start with our program as squirts and develop them right up through the 16U and 18U levels into juniors or college.”
